Dr. Angela Lombardi is an Associate Professor in the UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning (2012-present). Previously she was an Assistant Professor in Architectural Conservation (2002-2012) and in Architectural Design (2006-2008) at Sapienza University in Rome.

Her research, in the field of historic preservation, focuses on management of historic built heritage and archaeology within contemporary urban landscapes in an international context. Since 2004, Lombardi has been studying current European approaches on the policies of safeguarding and promoting historic architecture and archaeology in an urban context. She has been researching Latin American urban heritage since 2009, and is one of the editors of the book LIMA: The Historic Center. Analysis and Restoration (Rome: Gangemi, 2012).

Since 2013, Lombardi has been investigating cultural landscape conservation issues with an in-depth analysis of San Antonio’s water resources. In 2014, she started two new research projects sponsored by three grants: one focusing on the masonry and mortar analysis of two of the Franciscan Missions of San Antonio, Texas; another on the GIS Mapping of the Cultural Landscape of the Camino Real de los Tejas; the latter applying her investigation methodology to a larger scale.

In 2013 and 2014 she represented UTSA as a professor for the Archaeological Site Management Workshop held in Erbil, Iraq, which was dedicated to Iraqi professionals, organized by World Monuments Fund, and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Her lectures focused on International Principles for Heritage Management and Conservation and Stone Conservation.

Lombardi has more than ten years of architectural and preservation experience. Her professional work has focused on the investigation and preservation of masonry historic facades and traditional construction techniques, and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings, including interior design. Among others, she worked on the conservation projects for the Cathedral of Siena, Cathedral of Pienza, 18th century Opera Theater in Bergamo, and Renaissance painted facades in Rome. In 2012-2011, Lombardi worked as a preservation architect for the archaeological sites of Baalbek and Tyre in Lebanon, setting up the presentation project and the risk mapping of the two archaeological sites (work that was highly praised by the ICOMOS commission).

Lombardi is presently working as a consultant for providing public entities and private firms Historic Structures and Cultural Landscape Surveys and Analysis. She speaks Italian, English, French and Spanish fluently, and is now learning Arabic.
