Dr. Jae Yong Suk is an Assistant Professor in the UTSA College of Engineering and Integrated Design. He received his bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Ajou University and completed his Master of Building Science program at the University of Southern California in 2007. In his MBS thesis research, he has evaluated the glare remediation methods of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. In 2009, he started his Ph.D. in Architecture at the University of Southern California and completed in 2014. His dissertation was to develop a new glare analysis methodology which can predict and quantify levels of interior glare and exterior glare caused by sunlight and daylight.

Dr. Suk’s primary research interests are daylighting, architectural lighting, discomfort glare, building energy performance, occupant comfort, building façade systems, and sustainable architecture. He has published several peer-reviewed international journals such as Energy and Buildings and Lighting Research and Technology. He also published three research papers in American Solar Energy Society (ASES) conference.

After completing his Master program in 2007, Dr. Suk started working as a professional daylighting specialist and lighting consultant at HLB Lighting Design in Los Angeles and continued his practice until he joined UTSA. He has worked on various project types such as airports, museums, universities, offices, libraries, hotels, retails, parks and etc. from schematic design phase to construction phase. He has received seven lighting design awards from Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) for the projects: LAX International Terminal Curbside Enhancement, North Carolina AT&T State University Academic Classroom Building, Tom Bradley International Terminal Interior Renovation, Anacostia Neighborhood Public Library, Tenley Friendship Public Library, Playa Vista Central Park, and Museum of Tolerance Remodel. Some of these projects were published in Architectural Record, Architectural Lighting, and Interior Design magazines.

Dr. Suk is currently teaching at the UTSA Department of Architecture in the areas of building technology, environmental systems, lighting design, and daylighting. He is also a member of IESNA Daylight Metrics committee.
