The Center for Excellence in Engineering Education (CE3) provides a holistic approach for improving the quality of engineering education at The University of Texas at San Antonio. The center strives to improve the preparedness and marketability of the students in the College of Engineering for challenging and rewarding careers.

What We Do

Workshops for writing and problem solving skills, resources for internship opportunities, tutoring and gate keeper courses, FE exam preparation, and career advising are all examples of the activities on hand at the center. The center also facilitates sequential internships in local industries as part of student development.

Our Mission

The CE3 seeks to support UTSA’s engineering students by sponsoring special classes, initiatives and events that strengthen academic performance and foster a learning community that contributes to increased retention and graduation rates.

Our Objectives

  • Improve retention and graduation rates in the College of Engineering
  • Lead superior research on teaching and learning in engineering disciplines and to disseminate the results
  • Provide essential resources to engineering faculty and students to improve the quality of engineering education
  • Promote multidisciplinary capstone programs with industry involvement
  • Provide educational support for the science and math teachers and students for grades K-12 at the K-12
  • Increase external funding for engineering education activities

Engineering Summer Camp
June / July 2018

This is a combination of overnight and day engineering camp for Texas high school students. The support for this program is provided by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Halliburton, Union Pacific, HEB and Somerset School District. It provides scholarship and resources for the summer camp.

Healthy Frio

A rural community partnership to advance Latino obesity research. Support by National Institute of Health (R01 grant). The PI is Dr. David Akopian,, from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Co-PI is Dr. Zenong Yin from College of Education and Human Development.


Fast deployment service for automated business-to-client interactive messaging. A sub-contact by the University of Texas at Austin under an NSF prime grant. The PI is Dr. David Akopian from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

University Core Course

The Center has created a university wide core course entitled “The Impact of Modern Technologies on Society”. The course (designated as EGR 1343) is designed as a 3-hour credit lecture that can fulfill the core curriculum Social and Behavioral Science area requirement. The aim is to foster understanding of the modern technologies and their effect on today’s society. The course will be a technology and energy awareness course for students who are registered in disciplines that have no technology or science related courses in their curriculum.

Math Tutoring for Engineering Students

The Center provides tutoring sessions, conducted by engineering Teaching Assistants, for the engineering students in the calculus courses. Overall, tutoring has improved the math grades for engineering students
