The Department of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications for an open-rank tenured/tenure-track position to be filled by August 2020. The Department seeks exceptional candidates with: (1) a record of high quality research and scholarship, (2) excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, (3) leadership experience, and (4) a demonstrated commitment to inclusion and diversity. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level will be considered if sufficient independent research accomplishments can be demonstrated. Applicants for associate or full professor must have demonstrated outstanding research and teaching records that warrant an appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure (contingent upon Board of Regents approval). Exceptional candidates at the Full Professor level will also be considered for the endowed Whitacre Chair position in Mechanics. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field by the time of employment. Applicants are sought in the research area of computational high-speed aerodynamics. Subfields of interest include but are not limited to: hypersonic/supersonic aerothermodynamics, compressible flow, transition, pressure-gain combustion, chemically-reacting flows, and air-breathing propulsion.

The successful candidates are expected to build successful, externally-funded research programs in collaboration with other units in the department, the College of Engineering, the College of Science, and across the University. UTSA is finalizing the construction of a Mach 7 wind tunnel facility and the university is also planning a new school of data science—applicants that can successfully leverage these resources while demonstrating a creative vision for original research are particularly encouraged to apply. Given the nature of this field of research, applications from candidates eligible to participate in ITAR-regulated projects are preferred. The incumbent must be able to (1) develop an externally funded and internationally recognized research program; (2) supervise graduate students; (3) teach undergraduate and graduate classes in ME; (4) work with others across disciplinary boundaries; (5) show a commitment to inclusion and diversity; and (6) serve the department, College of Engineering, and the University.

UTSA is located in San Antonio, Texas, a vibrant city of more than 1.6 million people, with significant economic growth, numerous industrial establishments, and excellent school districts. The city and the University provide excellent cultural and educational opportunities as well as exceptional employment opportunities. The University, classified as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), has more than 30,000 students and is the third largest component in the University of Texas System. The Mechanical Engineering Department is housed within the College of Engineering and is ABET accredited with programs at the bachelors, masters, and PhD levels. The Department offers accredited B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and an MS degree in Advanced Manufacturing. The ME Department currently has 22 full-time T/TT faculty members (4 endowed chairs), 5 full time lecturers, with an enrollment of 1180 undergraduate, 80 M.S., and 45 Ph.D. students. The department’s annual research expenditure is over $3 million. UTSA is committed to student success and growth in student opportunities, as indicated by the $95 million Science and Engineering building to be completed in summer 2020.
