UTSA's research expenditure continues to grow year-over-year, reaching $134 million in fiscal year 2020.
Access to participation in university research is an important part of an excellent education, and UTSA plays a distinctive role among research universities in its commitment to undergraduate research. Some students have used their research at UTSA to lay the groundwork for entrepreneurship and to bring to market new inventions and patents.

During fiscal year 2020, UTSA’s research expenditures grew to $134 million, a 66% annual growth from $80.6 million in financial year 2019.
Thriving Research Culture at UTSA
Undergraduate and graduate students enjoy a thriving research culture at UTSA, working alongside faculty members who are highly regarded in their fields. As early as their freshman year, UTSA students are involved in a broad spectrum of research activities, whether it’s developing new approaches for stem cell therapy, creating bone scaffolds, examining the nuances of music theory or patenting new technologies.
To facilitate commercialization, the university has developed a strong entrepreneurial network to take UTSA inventions to market. This network, along with the UTSA Office of Commercialization and Innovation, enables industrial research partnerships, intellectual property management, proof-of-concept development, new venture incubation, entrepreneurial training, and policies and procedures that accelerate the transition of intellectual property from the university to industry.

Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Lean Systems
The Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Lean Systems (CAMLS) was founded in 2007 at the University of Texas at San Antonio to address a growing need for a strong interdisciplinary organization that can conduct research and development as well as provide education and training in lean manufacturing and six-sigma, supply chain and logistics engineering, warehouse systems, automation technologies, advanced sensors and robotics.
Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship
The Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (CITE), an interdisciplinary center in the Colleges of Business and Engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), was established in 2006 to create a pipeline for UTSA faculty, students and surrounding business community to develop new technology ventures.
Devoted to Sustainable Pervasive Urban Resilience, SPUR is a university, government, and industry collaboration to develop transformational technologies for one of today’s most pressing societal problems:

The Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute was created to develop citizen leaders for the global community committed to transform the energy future of San Antonio, Texas and the nation. The Institute integrates scientific discovery, engineering innovation and policy deliberations with pragmatic implementation and a commitment to our multicultural traditions to realize the promise of tomorrow’s America as a global energy leader.
The Open Cloud Institute (OCI) created in 2015 is part of an initiative to develop degree programs in cloud computing and big data and foster collaboration with industry, positioning UTSA and San Antonio as world leaders in open cloud technology. With UTSA already recognized as the top university in the country for cybersecurity, the Open Cloud Institute further distinguishes UTSA as a top tier-research institution. OCI has already received many in-kind donations from industry leaders such as Rackspace, Yahoo, AMD, Intel, Mellanox Technologies and Seagate, and the OpenStack Foundation. OCI is a neutral, third party research and education laboratory that encourages research, the development, and adoption of standards-based open technologies such as open compute, openstack, and openflow by providing infrastructure, platform and software.
The Center for Excellence in Engineering Education (CE3)
The Center for Excellence in Engineering Education (CE3) provides a holistic approach for improving the quality of engineering education at The University of Texas at San Antonio. The center strives to improve the preparedness and marketability of the students in the College of Engineering for challenging and rewarding careers.
The CCS provides academic research and services to benefit communities, completes large-scale research projects, provides research and educational opportunities for graduate students, and convenes leaders in the field for dialogue on global practices concerning sustainable development and construction.
The UTSA Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research (CURPR) aims to generate new knowledge of the forms, processes, and impacts of metropolitan and megaregional growth while advancing the creation of more sustainable, inspiring, and equitable cities. Through a multidisciplinary approach to research and discovery, CURPR aims to maximize its local impact through community engagement and service.
UTSA's Urban Future Lab aims to increase the scope of design and leverage social and cultural currencies to more directly engage in the processes of spatial production and economic development. It is an interdisciplinary think tank and research/teaching lab promoting action through design research, citizen agency and public interest to address the challenges of contemporary urbanization.
The IRM is a joint initiative emanating from the UTSA Colleges of Engineering and Sciences in conjunction with multiple entities throughout the San Antonio community to establish multidisciplinary teams combining academic, clinical, military, and biotechnological expertise to address grand challenges in Regenerative Medicine. We seek ground-breaking advances in basic and clinical research while educating students and young investigators in the multifaceted disciplines that make up the field of Regenerative Medicine.
