Vincent B. Canizaro currently teaches design and graduate courses in architectural theory focused on the issues of regionalism and environmental architecture & sustainability. His other research and practice interests include community-oriented design, design media & process, architectural drawing, landscape, and site-specific design theory. He has written for Texas Architect, the AIA San Antonio Guidebook to Architecture, and published Architectural Regionalism: Collected Writings on Place, Identity, Modernity, and Tradition in 2007 with Princeton Architectural Press. That book, which documented regionalism’s intellectual history in architectural theory, was awarded UTSA’s President’s Distinguished Achievement Award for Creative Production in 2008. As a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Architectural Education, he has co-edited two special issues of the JAE (May, 2007) on Architecture and Landscape (February, 2004) and Sustainable Architecture (May, 2007). He has published two chapters in both volumes of Pragmatic Sustainability, the first entitled: “Regionalism, Place Specificity, and Sustainable Design,” in 2010 and “Regionalism, Place, Specificity, and Sustainable Design in North America and Europe” in  2017 (both edited by Steven Moore) with MIT Press. His writing and research has been published in regional, national and international conference proceedings, and he participated and been invited to local and international symposia. His forthcoming writings on regionalism will be included in the Routledge Companion to Architectural History (chapter) and the Encyclopedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World – 2nd Edition (two entries) in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Canizaro has been a visiting critic at the University of Montana, Oregon, LSU, and UT Austin. His innovative series of studios, entitled collectively The Land That Could Be Project – are aimed at provoking and providing design ideas in local communities. Work by his students has appeared in local newspapers and local television newscasts. In 2008 working with the City of Boerne and in collaboration with Darryl Ohlenbusch, he completed a book that documented the research and design efforts of students entitled Document on the City: Boerne, Texas (Lulu Press, 2008).

He is a registered architect in Massachusetts and has practiced in Austin, Boston, Rhode Island, and California, in a variety of roles. He has co-curated (w/ Mark Blizard) shows at Blue Star contemporary Art Space (Tools as Art, Frozen Music) and been awarded (w/ Rick Lewis) a Juror’s Choice Award from AIA San Antonio for a design-build project with students, the Friedrich Building Installation project.
